Showplace Theatre News
As our 32nd season comes to an end we reflect upon
a great year...

Welcome to Our New Executive Director
and Artistic Director
We were thrilled to welcome our newest staff members in January
2006, Abby Subak as Executive Director and Kathleen
Conroy Mukwashi as Artistic Director.
Abby Subak comes to PST after 10 years of serving various
non-profit and advocacy organizations as a fundraiser, program
coordinator, staff recruiter, and volunteer. She is committed
to extending accessibility to performing arts and puppetry for
all audiences. She found PST early in 2005 when she brought
her 3-year-old son to see, "Bingo the Circus Dog", which was
love at first site. She is currently working part-time as our
Executive Director, and will be focused on stabilizing the
theatre's finances and strategic planning for the future of
our theatre.
Kathleen Conroy Mukwashi comes to PST with a background
and passion for puppetry. She graduated with her Master's from
the famed University of Connecticut Puppet Arts Program and
was a former member of the Underground Railway Theater. Kathleen
brings with her, experience in costume design, technical theater,
theater production/management, and education. She has had an
association with PST through the Boston Area Guild of Puppetry
for many years. Kathleen is working on introducing new performers
and performances at the theatre, continuing to present quality
performances, establishing educational programming, and
furthering community outreach.
Mother's Day Tea a Success
PST hosted its first Mother's Day Tea in honor of Mother's Day
on the weekend of the premier performance of "The Fisherman &
His Wife", by Louisiana based puppet troupe, Calliope Puppets.
Tea sandwiches and cookies were accompanied by tea and showed
to be a great success. We are looking forward to hosting
another next year!
Happy Birthday to PST!
On Friday, June 2nd, PST will host a
benefit in honor of its 32nd birthday
in collaboration with Kitsch In Sync, the popular improvisational
troupe who utilizes the theatre space for its monthly performances
and weekly rehearsals. The performance will include comedy and
puppets, with refreshments served after the show. Need I say
more?
Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the box office in
advance by calling 617-731-6400.
Join in the Summer Fun
The summer is a great time to come to the Puppet Showplace
Theatre. It is a time to step out of the heat and enjoy a
puppet show in an air-conditioned theatre.
Make a day of it! Bring a group of friends or enjoy the
offerings of the local shops, including The Children's
Book Shop, Henry Bear's Park, or the Brookline Public
Library.
Hungry? Brookline Village offers a wonderful variety of food
options, to suit everyone's lunch cravings.
Looking for a day in the sun? There is a park minutes from
our doorstep and we are conveniently located near a number
of outdoor sanctuaries, such as the Jamaica Plain Pond,
Arnold Arboretum and Halls Pond Sanctuary.
There's always the Mass Transit across the street that you
can take to the Boston Common, Fenway Park, or just about
anywhere.
PST Highlights
Our summer series begins in June and will include classic
tales with the addition of weekend performances on June 3 & 4,
10 & 11 and 17 & 18 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
Through July and August we will be featuring a collection
of old favorites and new productions.
In August, PST welcomes three premier puppet shows:
The Firebird by The Puppet People on August
9 & 10, inspired by the Russian folktale and popular ballet
of The Firebird;
The Last Dragon on Earth by Crabgrass Puppet
Theatre on August 23 & 24, introduces the concept of
species extinction and the theory that princesses don't
always need rescuing;
The Twig Family by Deborah Costine on August 30
& 31, is the story of an imaginary family living in harmony
with nature.
Puppetry with Objects
Two of our summer shows, Snow White & Other Tales on July 26 &
27, and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimy on August 16 & 17,
feature a special style of puppetry called object puppetry.
Established over 20 years ago, object puppetry uses different
items as its puppets. This makes for an imaginative and hysterically
funny puppet show.
These popular and award-winning productions are enjoyed by
audiences of all ages and are perfect for older children and teens.
Thank You
Without the generous support of friends, donors and volunteers,
this theatre could not continue bringing the wonder of puppetry
