Puppet Lab focuses on the materials, engineering, and design side of puppetry arts. Together, we’ll tackle creative challenges in a fun, hands-on, and supportive environment that encourages experimentation. We’ll bravely go beyond simple craft projects to learn tools, techniques, and topics in 3D design. Kids will learn by doing, gain confidence in their abilities, and discover new strategies for solving interdisciplinary problems.
Week of July 8 - Mastering Mechanisms: From blinking eyes to moving mouths, puppeteers design and build mechanisms (“mechs”) to capture specific movements and add special effects and surprises to their characters. Kids will see advanced puppet mechs in action, build a variety prototype puppets, and engineer their own creative characters.
Week of July 15 - Creating Characters from Foam Patterning: From Muppet-style mouth puppets to the giant beasts of The Lion King, lightweight and versatile foam is a puppeteer's best friend. Kids learn how to transform paper sketches into patterns and 3D designs as we create complex creatures and bring them to life.
