About the Class

Shadow Girls Cult uses a mind-bending blend of techniques with overhead projection to create an animated film-like shadow puppetry experience — join them for a crash course in the basics!

Puppetry artists Cass Bray and Zane Exactly will lead participants through an exploration of using overhead projectors, 2-D shadow puppets, and a projection screen. Participants will be guided on how to transform simple materials into unique and bold shadows, experimenting with different shapes, textures, colors, and characters to breathe life into new stories and ideas. You will leave with a grasp of the fundamentals of shadow puppet manipulation and construction — ready to start creating your own puppets!

Shadow Girls Cult invites participants of all experience levels to experiment and play with them in this one-evening workshop! Youth age 10 and up are also welcome, accompanied by an adult also taking the workshop.

Recommended for adults and youth ages 10+ accompanied by an adult

About the Instructor

Shadow Girls Cult is an award-winning queer shadow puppetry and projections duo based out of Seattle, WA. Using overhead projectors, adapted camera irises, 2-D shadow puppets, human silhouettes, and other analog technology, they create puppet magic for audiences all over the U.S. Their full-length shadow show UNRAVELING was awarded the 2025 Henson Foundation Workshop Grant & 4Culture’s 2025 Project Grant, and was recently voted “Most Surprising Performance” & “Fan Favorite” at the 2025 Asheville Fringe Festival. In 2025, SGC also made their debut at The Center for Puppetry Arts, and were teaching artists in residency at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta, and the Bright Ideas Project in Vermont.
