About the Class

Discover the movement and stories within different materials in this four-session weekly class, culminating in a short performance! Explore how we are shaped and re-shaped by the stuff we perform with. Beginning with our hands and senses we will move, move with, and be moved by materials.

Each week will explore different types of materials and the performance qualities they contain, including: water (ice, water, mist), paper (flight, weight, texture, and breath), string (entanglings, traveling, and animations), and landscapes (places that change, senses, and sharing). Participants will work individually and collaboratively on devising performance with these materials. During the final session, a performance will be devised and presented to an audience of invited friends.

Anyone and everyone curious about performing with materials is welcome!

About the Instructor

Max's puppet work has been seen on both American coasts, Europe, and Japan. Max has an MA in Advanced Theatre Practice (Devised Theatre) from Central School of Speech and Drama in London and has also studied with Martin Shaw (Mythology, Landscape, and Storytelling), Joanna Gilar (Fairy Tales and Ecology), Josef Krofta/DRAK Theatre (Puppetry), Amy Trompetter (Puppetry & Activism), Sandglass Theater (Puppetry) and Alice Gottschalk (Object Movement). For seven years, Max also was a member of Theatre of Yugen, a performance group dedicated to the study and performance of Japanese Noh and Kyogen theatre forms.

Max co-creates with and within ecologies of intimacy, vulnerability, reciprocity and play; through puppetry, design, performance and direction; ever curious about the patterns and potentials of holding, beholding, tenderness and tending — in ongoing conversation with cardboard, string, shadow, word, weather, breath, glass, papier mâché, moss, metal, leaves and light.
