Sampan "Hand in Glove" — Featuring "The Fiery Mountain and Its Princess"

The performers of The Fiery Mountain and Its Princess: A Monkey King Tale

Recently, Sampan, the only bilingual Chinese-English Newspaper in New England, spoke with Margaret Moody and Madeleine Beresford of Galapagos Puppets, as well as musician Jimmy Zhao, about their upcoming show The Fiery Mountain and Its Princess: A Monkey King Tale.

Sampan’s Adam Smith learned all about Moody’s time in Taiwan in the 1980s, where she was introduced to master puppeteer Li Tien-Lu and the magic of Bu Dai Xi hand puppetry. The article goes on to chronicle Galapagos Puppets’ journey to bringing the tale of The Fiery Mountain and Its Princess to life.

Moody told Sampan that she is “particularly drawn to the show, which is part of the Journey to the West series of Chinese folktales, because ‘there is a moral ambiguity and a reality that is beautiful; it’s not black and white moral values.’”

On Puppet Showplace’s stage this February, the Bu Dai XI puppet show is set to “live, improvised scores” performed by Jimmy Zhao and his daughter as the Jimmy Zhao Chinese Music Ensemble.

“I always try something new at each show,” Zhao told Sampan. “Every time I bring a special instrument.”
