Last weekend, on June 13th, Puppet Showplace Theater’s Creative Residency for Black Puppeteers presented works by its sixth cohort at Amplify: The Creative Residency for Black Puppeteers Showcase at Boston University’s Joan & Edgar Booth Theater.
Ahead of the showcase, The Boston Globe spoke with CRBP Community Curator (and CRBP 2020 alum) Tanya Nixon-Silberg about the origins of the residency, which started in 2020 as what Globe writer C. Shardae Jobson described as “an annual residency program to nurture and support emerging and experienced talent.”
Residency Coordinator (and CRBP 2023 alum) Ash Winkfield, 2026 Project Mentor Marcella Murray, and Puppet Showplace’s Executive Artistic Director Veronica Barron were also quoted in the piece.
“…[P]eople are really excited to see art from Black people and a showcase that only has Black faces on stage,” Ash Winkfield told The Boston Globe.
The Boston Globe went on to shout out the 2026 CRBP fellows — Beyonce Armstrong, Majeedah Johnson, Samuel J. Lewis II, and Danyett Tucker — with Murray noting this year’s artists “represent and expound on the different techniques and perspectives that are not only in the Black puppetry space, but the puppetry space at large.”
