The New England Theatre Geek, “Slapstick reverie: ‘Death and the Fool: A Tarot-Inspired Medieval Folly’”

“At times, the piece flickers with Monty Python-esque buffoonery, but it never stays in those brasher places for long. Mostly, it feels like the headspace between a lullaby and a dream, sometimes skimming the surface of strange, dark fears but always returning to quieter, comfortable rest.”

Last week, Puppet Showplace Theater audiences were treated to two evening performances of Death & The Fool: A Tarot-Inspired Medieval Folly by Happenstance Theater. The slapstick comedy, whimsical mystery, and laugh-out-loud fun garnered the attention of writer Maegan Bergeron-Clearwood, who reviewed the show for The New England Theatre Geek.

Much to our delight, The New England Theatre Geek captured the spirit of these performances perfectly: “Death, the Fool eventually learns, is inevitable,” they write, “so why not make merry and dance our way to the end?”

“The Happenstance [Theater] ensemble,” The New England Theatre Geek goes on to note, “understands that a knowing smile, simple gesture, or well-placed drumbeat can communicate an entire story to an audience.” We couldn’t agree more!
